Debbie Blake, Cape Town
I love travel and so I know I’m in the right industry. I simply love the thought of travel. I’ve calmed down a bit now because I’m part of a family of three but I still plan all our yearly holidays and always have a list of places to go in my head. I drive my husband mad with my thoughts of where we’re going to go this year, and where we might be able to go next year.
I was lucky because I was able to escape Joburg as a child. My family would take my sister and me overseas on ski holidays, and to local spots like the Kruger Park, Ballito, and Cape Town. In my twenties I moved to London where I worked and travelled to parts of Europe: Greece, Turkey, Portugal, Spain, France, and the Netherlands. I also visited New Zealand and Australia, and before heading home after 5 years abroad, I spent 2 months on an unforgettable overland trip through Kenya, Tanzania, Namibia and Botswana.
When I returned to Joburg after all my gallivanting, I settled down and was offered a job working for a small tour operator specialising in creating personalised safaris throughout Southern and East Africa. After four years I decided it was time for a change and started at Luhambo Tours in June 2014. My love for this country, and travel is why I enjoy this job so much. I suppose it’s safe to say I’ve seen a bit of our blue planet and yet, there’s something special about South Africa and its bushveld, mountains and spectacular beaches. I especially love Cape Town, and I feel privileged to live in this scenic part of the country. I always hoped that I would end up here, and lucky me, here I am. Debbie manages the bookings for our clients.
